SCCC Adds New Patient Care Program for Fall 2026

11/21/2025 12:00:00 PM

èßäÉçÇø is pleased to announce the launch of a new Patient Care Program scheduled to begin in the Fall 2026 semester. This cutting-edge initiative is designed to prepare students for in-demand careers in healthcare support, with a focus on hands-on training, community partnerships, and student-centered success.

The College received a $25,000 grant from the John and Margaret Post Foundation to support the new Patient Care Technician program. The grant, which supports charitable organizations that improve the quality of life for families and society at large, is aimed at enhancing healthcare education and training opportunities in the region. This will support the development and launch of the Patient Care Technician program for the fall of 2026. This initiative aligns with SCCC's commitment to providing high-quality education that meets the evolving needs of the community.

"We are grateful to the John and Margaret Post Foundation," said President Dr. Cory Homer. "The grant will enable us to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the healthcare field, which will ultimately benefit our students and the community."

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are essential members of the healthcare team, providing hands-on support to meet patients’ basic needs. They play a critical role by recording vital signs, assisting with mobility and transfers, and responding quickly to patient concerns. PCTs are also trained to perform key clinical tasks, including collecting blood specimens, performing electrocardiography (EKGs), providing basic life support, and performing laboratory procedures. Working under the supervision of registered nurses, they follow strict HIPAA privacy regulations and adhere to infection control standards and OSHA guidelines.

The Patient Care Technician program at SCCC will prepare students for careers in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other healthcare settings. SCCC students will receive hands-on training and guidance from experienced faculty, ensuring they are prepared to meet the demands of this profession and the national certification requirements.

"We are excited to launch this new program and expand our offerings in healthcare education," stated Dr. Suzan Melik, Allied Health Program Supervisor. "This grant not only enhances our curriculum but also reinforces SCCC's role as a provider of education and workforce development in Sussex County."
