Outdoor Shooting Range Information

The SCCC Public Safety Training Academy, while dedicated to our students, also has a proud history of supporting our local first responders. We strive to enhance their efforts, ensuring they have the training needed to better serve our community. In line with this dedication, the College intends to establish an outdoor firing range for local law enforcement. This facility will provide them with essential training opportunities, enabling them to protect our community with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The first phase of the range was developed by Dykstra Engineering in accordance with all local laws and procedures.
  • The second phase of the range was developed by Spire Ranges. Spire ranges develops ranges all over the country for law enforcement and the FBI.
  • This is going to be a 100-yard shooting range.
  • Originally intended to host 15 bays, it was decreased to 10 bays to assist with noise mitigation.
  • There will be no night-time shooting.
  • The range will be open from 9:00 am to dusk.
  • In the future there will be limited ambient-light shooting (dusk conditions, dependent on season).
  • The berms are 10 feet high, which is 2 feet above the state minimum. The height was increased to further mitigate sound and support safety.
  • The backstop is 14 feet high, which is 4 feet above state minimum.
  • All police certified weapons with muzzle velocities of 3,600 feet per second or less are permitted.
  • This includes: handguns, shotguns, and rifles.
  • The range utilizes a self-collecting and contained lead entrapment system via the rubber backstop trap. There is no soil in the backstop.
  • Lead is mined once per year (or more frequently depending on usage) by a certified lead-remediation and range-cleaning company.
  • The PSTA will use the same remediation company that is servicing the indoor range.
  • Monday through Friday
  • Starting with a few days a week
  • Occasional Saturdays, as required to meet training needs
  • 9:00 am to dusk
  • No Sunday operations
  • The range will not be open to the public during its first year of operation.
  • Our intent is to eventually offer community-based training opportunities, beyond law enforcement, on a very limited basis.
  • Adding additional protection to the range through the construction of an eyebrow structure, which catches bullets that might otherwise travel too high.
  • Trees
  • We will seek assurances that this will not evolve into a commercial enterprise or a seven-day-a-week operation.

Noise Hygeine Study

SCCC has commissioned Terracon to assess the potential impact of noise pollution from the proposed outdoor range at the Public Safety Training Academy.

Below 80 dB Following a comprehensive investigation, it was determined that the noise levels in the nearby areas were below the Hampton Township Noise Ordinance limit of 80 dB for impulsive sounds.
Noise Abatement The Hampton Township Noise Ordinance prohibits impulsive sound between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am. SCCC will only permit range use from 9:00 am to dusk.
Hearing Protection Only the proposed outdoor firing range, within the berm area, showed noise level readings above Hampton Township's Noise Ordinance level of 80 dB.
