HSCI-130: Electrocardiography & Cardiac Monitoring Technician

In this course, students will learn the anatomy and physiology of the Cardiovascular system, the physiological steps of the cardiac cycle, ECG interpretation, identification and elimination of artifacts, and identifying basic arrhythmia. In the laboratory setting, students will learn the fundamentals of Electrocardiography, Holter, and Telemetry monitoring. Additionally, students will learn how to connect patients to the Central monitoring station, troubleshoot ECG machine issues and telemetry unit technical problems, and keep track of the normal functioning of monitors. Students learn to recognize basic normal sinus rhythm and the most common abnormal cardiac arrhythmias in real-time. Upon successful course completion, students will be eligible to sit for the National EKG Certification exam. Emphasis will be placed on proper patient preparation for accurate testing results and equipment maintenance. Students also will be trained to acquire the American Heart Association鈥檚 Healthcare Provider CPR/AED card for the Health Care professionals.

HSCI-140: Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection Technician

This course introduces the methods and techniques of phlebotomy by providing skills necessary to perform proper venipuncture and capillary puncture (finger-stick) techniques for obtaining human blood specimens and other methods of collecting body specimens within a health care facility or laboratory setting while complying with OSHA Standards. In the laboratory setting, the student will work with various devices to collect blood, urine, stool, and other body specimens to perform waived Tests and Point of Care Testing (PoCT). Students will also learn normal blood values and methods for assessing blood components. Upon successful course completion, students will be eligible to sit for the National Certificated Phlebotomy Technician Exam.

Additional Course Information:

• Upon successful course completion, students will be eligible to sit for the National Certificated Phlebotomy Technician Exam or National EKG Certification exam.
• Students will also be trained to acquire the American Heart Association's Healthcare Provider CPR/AED card for Health Care professionals.
• The applicant must present education documentation such as a valid high school diploma or higher earned degree, transcript, or other acceptable official documentation that confirms that the applicant meets or exceeds the minimum level of academic achievement.
• In place of a diploma, the applicant may submit a letter from their immediate supervisor on a business letterhead documenting their experience working in the medical field.

Additional Allied Health programs include an accredited Medical Assistant Certificate program, Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate of Achievement and an Associate Degree in Health Sciences.
